Ayurveda As A Psychometric Tool – How The Wisdom of Ayurveda Can Help You Choose Your Career
A few weeks ago, a close friend that I have known for well over a decade asked me if I knew my MBTI score. My first thought was, how does she not know my score? And then I realized we had never discussed psychometric assessment tools.
Before I answered her question, I had a vision of taking various personality assessments (such as MBTI, Hogan, Firo-B, and the MSCEIT for Emotional Intelligence). Obsessed much, you may be thinking? Well, actually, completing all of these personality inventory assessments was a requirement in my masters program in social & organizational psychology.
I answered her with INFP- (Introvert, Intuitive, Feeling, Perceiving). I reflected on all of the assessments and everything I learned about myself and yet, I felt something was missing. I had insight into some personality characteristics and perhaps a new language to discuss these traits; however, I truly felt that the Psychometric Assessment tools lacked a holistic view of my complicated self.
By holistic view, I mean a deep understanding of the body, mind and spirit aligned with career choice and engagement in work that completely fulfills your soul. As a yoga instructor and Ayurveda specialist, I have come to realize the importance of adopting a systemic view of my life. I used to believe that as long as I had something that I was passionate about, it was okay to stay in a day job that JUST payed my bills. As long as I could feel fulfilled in one area, I thought it was okay to be unfulfilled in another. After a few years of internal conversations convincing myself to be content with this incongruent form of fulfillment, I realized I am a system. A system that requires all parts of me to work in harmony, in contentment and in alignment with my true nature.
Ayurveda, the science of life, dating back 5,000 years states that our true nature is the center of our being and the more we deviate from our true nature, the more dis-ease we will experience. We are microcosms of nature, so every cell in our body mirrors the 5 elements found in nature: space, air, fire, water and earth. These 5 elements combine into three constitutions or doshas: Vata, Pitta and Kapha. We all are different and unique with different proportions of these 5 elements as our true nature, or defined as ‘Prakruti.’
The Vata dosha is comprised of Space + Air.
The Pitta dosha is comprised of Fire + Water.
The Kapha dosha is comprised of Earth + Water.
We all have a primary and secondary dosha. There is a very small percentage of the population that is tri-doshic, i.e. have equal parts of all 3 doshas.
So, what can your Prakruti (i.e your primary and secondary dosha) tell you about the type of work you should engage in or what career choices you make?
Let’s assume someone is a primarily a Pitta and their secondary dosha is Vata.
The Pitta dosha is fiery, competitive, heated, impatient and is a perfectionist. A Vata dosha is airy, needs variety, easily bored, and likes constant change.
How would a Pitta Vata function as an application developer coding in the same language everyday working in a large competitive investment bank in Manhattan?
The competitive environment of the investment bank would drive the Pitta to up the ante with his/her competitive nature, likely leading to anxiety, heart burn and acid reflux. A Pitta prefers to be his/her own boss. Working for someone else in a large competitive organization, would not be a good fit. The daily routine would drive the Vata to be insanely bored daydreaming about greener pastures feeling completely unfulfilled and sad. Does this sound like the right career choice for a Pitta Vata?
The 5 elements and doshas lend themselves to various personality characteristics that when assessed properly can help an individual make choices that are aligned with their true nature.
Are you curious if the work you have chosen is aligned with your true nature? Are you considering a career change or have you started a new business?
