How I Learned to Bring My Whole Self to Work
As an employee in Corporate America, I thought I had to keep my passions separate from my work. Now my work is my passion!
From Worker to Yogi
I had been trained, by my time at NYU’s Stern School of Business and by my time in the consulting and financial services industry, that feelings had no place in an office. Spirituality, mental health, sadness, joy… these were not professional topics. So I learned to keep it all buttoned up under my blazer.
It wasn’t until my Masters from Columbia University in Social & Organizational Psychology that I realized I could not only bring my full self to work but help others do so as well.
Ten years ago, I began to get serious about Yoga & Ayurveda. For me, a constant learner and teacher, “getting serious” didn’t mean getting serious about my own practice only. It meant studying to teach others how to practice it too. In Yoga & Ayurveda, I found my joy and balance again.
From Practitoner To New Entrepreneur
As my passions grew, so did the tension between my personal self and my professional self. My coworkers knew that I taught Yoga, but I still felt that I had to be careful when sharing information about of my ‘other’ life.
Finally, in 2010, I decided to “come out” as a Yoga and Ayurveda teacher. I was the VP of Talent Management & Communications at Morgan Stanley at the time, so I decided to start a brand specifically for my Yoga and Ayurveda self. The brand, SattvicLiving, was my passion personified.
I continued to slowly grow SattvicLiving in the wellness space. It was my side hustle and my release; however, I struggled to understand how to make it a thriving business that allowed me to serve others and sustain myself financially. So I expanded my services and launched my own line of Ayurvedic Dosha blend products.
From Unemployed to Fulfilled
My big break finally came, disguised as bad news. I was downsized in 2013, giving me the freedom to figure out a harmonious formula that would encapsulate all my knowledge, strengths, and passions: social & organizational psychology, adult learning, coaching, and Yoga & Ayurveda.
In the last four years, I’ve been weaving these parts of me together slowly. I’ve infused mindful practices into the professional development trainings I offer at companies like Google and Deloitte, places full of people who struggle just like I did to value all the parts of themselves at the workplace. I’ve coached professionals in interpersonal challenges and stress management, bringing principles of both Ayurveda and social psychology to bear. It’s amazing too see whole teams transformed by the fusion of both systems of thought.
From SattVicLiving To Neelu Kaur
The brand I created in 2010 has served me well these many years. But now, it's time for my brand to reflect this fusion of my passions, to stand for all I stand for. I am no longer Neelu Kaur, founder of SattvicLiving, my passion, and leadership coach/trainer, my work. I am Neelu Kaur, a professional who lives in the space at the intersection of wellness and leadership. And I invite you to join me.
Through this blog and brand, I'll provide digestible chunks of research, insights, and tips that will help you be happier, healthier and more productive!
Love and light,
