5 Steps to Unlocking a Creative Block

If you’ve ever felt stuck, uninspired, or lacking creative energy, you’re not alone. Many content creators struggle with how to overcome creative blocks, especially after periods of stress or overwork.

The good news? There are simple, practical ways to boost creativity and get inspired again. Whether you’re looking for tips for creative inspiration, fresh ideas, or just a nudge back into flow, these five strategies will help you unlock your creative energy.

1. Curate Your Joy

What do you find easy and enjoyable?

For some of us this is socializing with friends, for others it’s learning a totally new skill, or getting immersed in a favorite hobby. It may even be work, but, for the purposes of this exercise, let’s make it not work.

As a sensory seeker, my idea of a joyful experience is giving myself time and permission to explore a new neighborhood or cafe with my five senses — smell, taste, touch, sight, and sound. I might sample fragrances, touch fabrics, chat with shop owners, or just smell the flowers and sip on tea.

The key is not just stumbling across joy but actively curating it. Making space for delight is a radical act of self-advocacy that enhances creativity and self-esteem. Treat it as essential fuel for your creative work.

2. Seek Without Attachment to the Outcome

Creative breakthroughs often come when you stop fixating on what the result should look like. Instead of chasing the “perfect” experience, notice what’s right in front of you and tap into how it makes you feel.

Detach from expectations and stay open to serendipity. When you release control, you often find exactly what you need, be it an environment, idea, or shift in perspective that sparks creativity.

3. Do It Differently

Changing your creative medium is one of the fastest ways to break through a block. If you usually type, grab a pen and notebook. If you’re a writer, try sketching, recording a voice memo, or dictating ideas while walking.

This simple shift wakes up your brain, disrupts routine, and leads to results that feel fresh and authentic.

4. Let It Be

Instead of forcing inspiration, give yourself permission to pause. Ground yourself using your senses: notice what you see, hear, feel, taste, and smell.

As you sit in the moment, allow your ideas to flow naturally. Capture them without self-censorship — don’t worry about spelling, grammar, or whether an idea will be useful. Flow without judgement is the key to genuine creativity.

5. Look Out of Your Wonder Window

Every creator faces self-doubt. To counteract the “imposter monster,” try a visualization exercise: picture your ideal reader or audience engaging with your work, nodding along, and feeling inspired by it. This is what I call your “wonder window”.

Will it be on tv, a massive conference stage, a podcast, or your next team meeting? It's your wonder window and YOU get to create your vision. Use your imagination and senses. Who will you be looking at?  A videographer or your partner cheering you on in the audience? What will you be wearing?

This simple mental shift reframes your self-talk and reminds you of the impact your creativity can have. When self-doubt shows up, acknowledge it, but don’t let it take over.

Final Thought

Creative blocks aren’t permanent. By curating joy, staying open to unexpected outcomes, changing your medium, embracing flow, and visualizing your impact, you can reignite your creative spark anytime. If you’re wondering how to overcome creative blocks, start small with one of these steps — and watch your inspiration return.
